In other words, 1 in 4 Indians risks\ndying from an NCD before they reach the age of 70. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-4daN_wqWIvU\/VMscpZoSUlI\/AAAAAAAAAIU\/keCUSmF6Vyc\/s1600\/img-31.jpg?resize=536%2C281\" alt=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-4daN_wqWIvU\/VMscpZoSUlI\/AAAAAAAAAIU\/keCUSmF6Vyc\/s1600\/img-31.jpg\" width=\"536\" height=\"281\"\/><figcaption>source: who.int<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-4daN_wqWIvU\/VMscpZoSUlI\/AAAAAAAAAIU\/keCUSmF6Vyc\/s1600\/img-31.jpg\"><\/a>WHO\/SEARO\/Payden<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHeart diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases now affect younger and younger people,\u201d says Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of WHO South-East Asian Region. \u201cThe millions of productive individuals lost prematurely to NCDs are seriously undermining social and economic development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/pollution-diseases.jpg?resize=638%2C479&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/pollution-diseases.jpg?w=638&amp;ssl=1 638w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/pollution-diseases.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/pollution-diseases.jpg?resize=360%2C270&amp;ssl=1 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><figcaption>source: pinterest.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But the country is not watching and waiting for the burden to grow.\nInstead, the Government of India is taking immediate action and targeting the\ngreatest risk factors contributing to NCDs\u2014unhealthy diets, physical\ninactivity, tobacco and alcohol use, and air pollution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Specific national targets and indicators<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with WHO\u2019s <em>Global action plan for the prevention and control\nof NCDs 2013-2020<\/em>, India is the first country to develop specific national\ntargets and indicators aimed at reducing the number of global premature deaths\nfrom NCDs by 25% by 2025. A National Multisectoral Action Plan that outlines\nactions by various sectors in addition to the health sector, to reduce the\nburden of NCDs and their risk factors, is in the final stage of development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is heartening to see the Government of India taking the leadership\nrole in the prevention and control of NCDs,\u201d says Dr Nata Menabde, WHO\nRepresentative to India. \u201cAs a partner to the global agenda on prevention and\ncontrol of NCDs, we are committed to supporting national efforts towards\nstrengthening the health systems to address the growing burden of NCDs and\ncomorbidities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Heart diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases\nnow affect younger and younger people.\u201d <\/strong>Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional\nDirector of WHO South-East Asian Region <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10<sup>th<\/sup> target: household air pollution<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The global action plan lists 9 targets for countries to set. But India has taken the unprecedented step of setting the tenth target to address household air pollution \u2014a major health hazard in the South-East Asian Region due to burning of solid biomass fuel and secondhand smoke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, 4 million deaths are caused by exposures to household (indoor) air pollution and 3.7 million deaths are attributed to outdoor air pollution. Approximately 40% of the deaths from indoor air pollution and 25% of those attributed to outdoor air pollution occur in the WHO South-East Asia Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/indoor-air-pollution.jpg?resize=640%2C425&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/indoor-air-pollution.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/indoor-air-pollution.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/indoor-air-pollution.jpg?resize=768%2C510&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Source: vitalstrategies.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must act to protect people from air pollution. The poor, living near\nbusy roads or industrial sites, are disproportionately affected by air\npollution,\u201d says Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh. \u201cWomen and children pay the\nheaviest price, as they spend more time at home breathing in smoke and soot\nfrom cooking stoves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s National Monitoring Framework for Prevention and Control of NCDs\ncalls for a 50% relative reduction in household use of solid fuel and a 30%\nrelative reduction in prevalence of current tobacco use by 2025. Countries in\nthe South-East Asia Region have also committed to reducing household air\npollution as part of the Regional Acton Plan for the Prevention and Control of\nNoncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Implementing the WHO\u2019s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/reduce-tobacco.png?resize=586%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/reduce-tobacco.png?w=586&amp;ssl=1 586w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/iihmrdelhi.edu.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/reduce-tobacco.png?resize=300%2C205&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><figcaption>Source: who.int<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, India has implemented the WHO\u2019s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control aimed at reducing the demand for tobacco products. The country has prohibited sales of tobacco products around educational institutions, restricted tobacco imagery in films and TV programmes, banned some smokeless tobacco products and developed tobacco-free guidelines for educational institutions.  In April 2015, the country will go a step further and require tobacco pictorial warnings to cover 85% of the package.
