Healthcare is one of the country’s most important industries, both in terms of income and jobs. The significant steps are done by the government in this area, as well as the government’s goal to release greater resources for the public health sector to prepare it for the future. The epidemiological shift, demographic transition, environmental changes, and social determinants of health are all part of India’s new public health agenda. Since its independence, the government has worked together to address key public health issues including malaria, TB, leprosy, high mother and infant mortality, and, more recently, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Health system improvement, human resource development, capacity building, and public health regulation are all significant aspects of the health sector. The Indian government has been implementing extensive structural and long-term reforms to boost the healthcare industry, as well as declared favorable policies to encourage FDI. The crisis has flooded the market with Indian start-ups, many of which have risen to the occasion and hastened the creation of low-cost, adaptable, and rapid solutions. India is also a land of opportunity for companies in the medical device business, with enormous potential for the growth of diagnosis and pathology centers, as well as miniaturized diagnostics. The practice of public health in India has been dynamic, with numerous challenges in its quest to improve the lives of its citizens.

Some of the few schemes introduced by the government are as follows:

  • The Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram: Adolescent engagement and leadership, equity and inclusion, gender equity, and strategic relationships with other sectors and stakeholders are essential principles of this program. The initiative allows all adolescents in India to reach their full potential by making educated and responsible decisions about their health and well-being, as well as gaining access to the resources and support they require.
  • National AIDS Control Organisation: It was established to ensure that all people living with HIV have access to appropriate treatment and are treated with respect. NACO intends to increase service access and accountability by promoting strong engagement with NGOs, women’s self-help groups, faith-based organizations, positive people’s networks, and communities. It is devoted to creating an environment in which persons infected with and impacted by HIV take a key role in all responses to the epidemic, at the state, district, and grassroots levels.
  • Ayushman Bharat: Ayushman Bharat aspires to treat health holistically at the primary, intermediate, and tertiary levels through a continuum of care strategy. Its first component focuses on developing the next-generation primary healthcare system through a system of HWCs to promote good health and detect disorders early. Increased emphasis on preventing disease and broad disease screening in primary care is long-term, sustainable methods for lowering the disease burden. Currently, out-of-pocket spending accounts for more than 60% of all healthcare costs, posing a significant difficulty in a nation like India, where a big portion of the population is impoverished. It is estimated that 63 million individuals fall into poverty each year as a result of a lack of insurance plans for their healthcare demands. PM-JAY is the nation’s biggest non-contributory government-sponsored health insurance system, providing poor and disadvantaged families with enhanced access to inpatient treatment.
  • National digital health mission (NDHM): The goal of NDHM is to construct registries of public and commercial facilities, health service providers, laboratories, and pharmacies, as well as to assist clinical decision-making and offer services such as telemedicine. It is expected that the thorough execution of the NDHM will release an added economic value of more than USD 200 billion for the health industry over the next ten years.
